THE LION MAN OF HOHLENSTEIN-STADEL

July 16th, 2011 by JOEY

Lion Man of Hohlenstein-Stadel
11 5/8 ” tall, carved from a mammoth tusk
30,000-26,000 BCE

Hohlenstein-Stadel in the Swabian Alps, Germany

The Lion Man of Hohlenstein-Stadel, discovered in 1939 in the Swabian Alps of Germany, is said to be one of the oldest statues in human history. The statue was dated back to the era of Paleolithic man around 30,000 – 26,000 BCE. It was carved from a mammoth’s tusk with a flint stone knife and stands at 11 5/8 inches tall. The Lion Man is one of the first anthropomorphic depictions of man, creating a wonderful dialogue about how nature influenced our thoughts and creativity. Some scholars believe it stands in relation to shamanism during that period, but others believe it to be a mythical deity or god of sorts. They still debate on the sex of the Lion Man, mainly because male lions found in this region of Germany do not sport the same mane we commonly associate them with.

It is truly amazing to see artifacts like this, showing us how creative and imaginative man was, even as far back as 30,000 BCE. Go humans go!

MATTHEWDAVID- INTERNATIONAL

July 13th, 2011 by JOEY

Another WINNER off of the Brainfeeder Records label!
This is one of my favorite tracks off of his new album Outmind. It is very meditative and ambient, while throwing you some really delicious little bursts of bass and glitch. I found myself sinking into some of the spontaneous but graceful pockets of some songs, finding myself rewinding back just so i could stay there a little bit longer.
Listen to more of MatthewDavid HERE.

Brainfeeder Records has very quickly become one of my favorite labels out there. Every album released under them this year has been golden! They feature some all-star heavy hitters like Daedelus, Teebs, Yuk, TOKIMONSTA, Flying Lotus (founders), and many others. MatthewDavid’s Outmind album is definitely the next big win and i look forward to seeing what’s next!

Rachel Meuler, born in Louisville, is a multidisciplinary artist working with drawing and painting, sculpture and installation, and costume-oriented performance art. She received her BFA in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1999, her MFA in Sculpture from SUNY Purchase in 2001, and has been living and working in New York City since.

Meuler has been an artist in residence at the Millay Colony for the Arts, Skidmore College, and the Abrons Art Center of the Henry Street Settlement. Her work is included in several slide registries, including the Drawing Center’s Viewing Program, was recently exhibited in a solo show at Rabbithole Gallery, and has been featured in Glasschord and Cultrehall Magazines.

Her work is informed by the fears and fantasies of contemporary culture. The specimen-like portraits and narratives of hybrid creatures speak to the painful beauty of individual struggle and evolutionary anomalies.

WALTON FORD

July 13th, 2011 by JOEY

“At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals may recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear, and others of the colonial era. But a closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ nature of traditional natural history themes. The beasts and birds populating this contemporary artist’s life-size paintings are never mere objects, but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreak havoc on a formal dinner table, an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. The book’s title derives from The Pancha Tantra, an ancient Indian book of animal tales considered the precursor to Aesop’s Fables.” – Taschen Books
