Philip Guston’s Halloween Party, 1942
Where The Wild Things Are, illustrations by Maurice Sendak
This was a very insteresting find for me, as I grew up with Where The Wild Things Are, and became a huge fan of Philip Guston’s work at a later age. Studying the imagery one can clearly see the similarities we find between the costumes the two boys in Halloween Party, 1942 are wearing and the outfits of Max in Where The Wild Things Are. I have to say that this is almost too uncanny. Philip Guston’s earlier work must certainly have played a large part in the creative development of Maurice Sendak’s illustrations.
