HEARTS A MESS

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

The sun is shining brightly here in NYC today which means I’m grabbing my Nikkon FE2, a few rolls of film, and heading on out to hit the pavement. But for some of you the sun may not be shining so brightly. If you find yourself stuck indoors pass the time watching this amazing video for Gotye‘s track Hearts A Mess. Directed and animated by the talented Brendan Cook at PictureDRIFT. The creative team at pictureDRIFT never disappoints.

pictureDRIFT is a creative team of designers, directors and animators producing innovative and outstanding visual communications through moving images, specializing in broadcast design, direction, animation and visual effects.

HOLLY GREENBERG

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Holly Greenberg is an artist that lives and works out of Syracuse, NY. Her prints and paintings explore the gendering of language and object through humor, double entendres, and unlikely juxtaposition.

All images above: screenprint and acrylic paint on MDO (Medium Density Overlay)

Go to her SITE and check out her QUEENS I HAVE KNOWN series. It’s my favorite.

Holly Greenberg received her BFA in studio arts from the University of Michigan and her MFA in printmaking from the Schol of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently Associate Professor of Printmaking at Syracuse University.

ZACH HILL – DARK ART

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

No better way to start off your Tuesday then with some hard hitting drums and a goth running through the suburbs. Zach Hill, the renowned drummer of Hella and Holy Smokes, shares this fantastic video off of his first solo album entitled Astrological Straits. Cinematography by Scott Cramer.

He employs complex time signatures, “feeling the beat”, rather than counting it out. The guy is a hard hitter too, going through equipment like no tomorrow.
Besides being one of the most interesting drummers around, Zach Hill is also a visual artist. He has done most of the drawings and art direction for Hella’s and The Holy Smokes’ albums. Check more of his work HERE.

She liked getting stoned and cracking each other’s toes

She loved Danny Devito, who she drew onto an egg and then cried the day she had to eat him

When she blinked one eye stayed down longer than the other

She had done too much acid

She thought clouds were grabbable, like cotton candy, until she was fourteen

She sang “so fresh and so clean” in the shower

She defended the homeless so long as they didn’t talk too much

She didn’t like anyone who talked too much

She was a kid except when she wanted to be mean

Then she was a practiced adult

She is alive, somewhere, and when she blinks one eye stays down longer

When she showers, she sings

And as I write this she dreams of eating the clouds from the sky

FRIENDS IN BROOKLYN

Monday, February 21st, 2011

This past Saturday Celebration & Microkingdom, of Baltimore’s Friends Records, were joined by New York’s Highlife at Brooklyn’s Death By Audio, and what resulted was a sonic eruption of awesome.

It was a great night of Baltimore music and poetry. The night’s first act Highlife treated us to his unique solo act with great backing beats and stealer effect work that enabled him to fill the room with great full bodied songs that got the night off on the right foot.

Then after a brief Baltimore style poetry break, Microkingdom set up but not on the stage, instead on the floor and took the crowd for an experimental jazz magic carpet ride.

Once again after another B-more-esq poetic interlude Celebration took the stage and musical jubilation ensued. Running through a bunch of new tunes and a few old ones, Celebration demonstrated why they’re one of Baltimore’s biggest and brightest bands. They’re f***ing tight, even overcoming a brief technical mishap they emerged cool, collected and ready to rock.

I can only hope to see more of the Baltimore scene up here in New York in the future.

Check out these videos from Celebration;
